The holiday was first proclaimed on March 23, 1960, by Newark, New Jersey mayor Leo P. Carlin. On June 7, 1960, by then Annapolis, Maryland mayor Arthur G. Ellington where he announced Keller’s 80th birthday. On June 19, 1980, President Jimmy Carter issues Proclamation #4767 to honor Helen Keller and her accomplishment. Since 1971, the Lions Club International has declared the holiday on June 1 annually. The day is generally observed internationally through the Blind Association and other international organizations that help people with this disability. Helen Adams Keller was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She had written a total of 12 published books and several articles. Her first publishing was The Frost King (1891). She published “The Story of My Life (1903)“, Helen Keller’s autobiography detailing her early life, especially her experiences with Anne Sullivan. This autobiography was adapted for film and stage, The Miracle Worker. She was a member of the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World. She also campaigned for women’s suffrage, labor rights, socialism, antimilitarism, and other similar causes. She devoted much of her later life to raising funds for the American Foundation for the Blind. She died in her sleep on June 1, 1968, at her home, Arcan Ridge, located in Easton, Connecticut.
