About Icelandic National Day:
Icelandic National Day celebrated on June 17th, an annual holiday in Iceland which commemorates the foundation of The Republic of Iceland on 17 June 1944. The formation of the republic was based on a clause in the 1918 Act of Union with Denmark. The Act recognized Iceland as an independent state under the Danish crown. The Act was allowed for a revision in 1943, but a vote on the revision to the Act was delayed until after the Second World War. After the Second World War Denmark was occupied by the Germans and Denmark ruled over Iceland in name only. In 1944, on June 17, Iceland declared independence. June 17th was chosen as Iceland’s National Holiday because of the date is most significant in Iceland’s history as it is the birthday of Jón Sigurdsson who pioneered the early independence movement which led to the 1918 Act of Union.
