International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2024

On 9 August each year, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed to raise awareness of the needs of indigenous peoples. It is celebrated as an honoring of the strength, resilience, dignity, and pride of Indigenous Peoples along with their artists, speakers, poets, performers, and a wide range of vendors and community service around the world.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was first pronounced by the United Nations General Assembly by resolution 49/214 of 23 December 1994, to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population. It was decided that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples shall be observed on 9 August every year, which marks the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights held in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1982.
