According to ILO, Hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education, health, leisure, and basic freedoms, violating this way their rights. To raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour, World Day Against Child Labour is celebrated by an International Labour Organization (ILO). It is held every year on June 12, is intended to foster the worldwide movement against child labour in any of its forms.
About World Day Against Child Labour:
The ILO was founded in 1919, to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection, and strengthen dialogue on work-related issues. The ILO became the first specialized agency of the UN in 1946. The International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations body that regulates the world of work, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. It was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182. According to ILO, 152 million children between the ages of 5-17 were in child labour, almost half them, 73 million, in hazardous child labour. (Based on UN.org and ILO. org)

This year due to the COVID-19 health pandemic and the resulting economic and labour market shock are having a huge impact on people’s lives and livelihoods. World Day Against Child Labour 2020 focuses on the impact of crisis on child labour. The theme for World Day Against Child Labour 2020 is “COVID-19: Protect children from child labour, now more than ever!”.
