International Chess Day is a worldwide celebration for chess celebrated on July 20 every year, to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. It has been celebrated as such since 1966, proposed by UNESCO after it was established by FIDE. The day is celebrated by many of the 605 million regular chess players around the world and this number holds at approximately the same level in countries as diverse as the US, UK, Germany, Russia, and India.

Overview About Chess:

Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. Chess is believed to be derived from the Indian game chaturanga sometime before the 7th century. Each player begins with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each piece type moves differently, with the most powerful being the queen and the least powerful the pawn. To this end game, the player has to checkmate the opponent’s king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture.
